The most important technical requirements for stainless steel are corrosion resistance, suitable mechanical properties, good cold, hot processing and welding and other technological properties. Chromium is the basic element for the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. When the amount of chromium in the steel reaches about 12%, the corrosion resistance of the steel in the oxidizing medium undergoes an abrupt increase. The surface of the steel at this time forms an extremely thin and dense chromium oxide film, preventing the metal substrate from being eroded (see metal corrosion).
